Replacing a garage door is more than the price of the new door. The old one has to come out, the opening has to be ready, the new door has to be fitted and wired, and the old door has to go somewhere. This guide sets out what a roller door replacement costs with us, either as a DIY kit delivered anywhere in mainland England and Wales or fitted by our engineers in Norfolk and Suffolk, using the prices on our own site.
What a DIY replacement costs
With a DIY kit, you pay for the door and delivery, and supply the time and a second pair of hands. The Garage Door Builder prices each choice as you make it, VAT included:
| Item | Builder price inc VAT |
|---|---|
| Standard 55 single door | From £505 |
| Premium 55 | From £605 |
| Classic 77, by width band | £815, £965 or £1,365 |
| Curtain colour | White and dark brown included |
| Safety edge kit with two remotes | £135 hard wired, £180 wireless |
| Delivery | £65, or collect free |
The £505 figure is a Standard 55 door in white with key switch controls. Other curtain colours add between £10 and £35, and a black or anthracite grey top box and guide runners add £40. If the roller door will be the only way into the garage, the external manual override kit adds £115. Our post on DIY vs professionally fitted roller doors compares the two routes in more depth.
What a fitted replacement costs
In Norfolk and Suffolk, we do the whole job. A fitted roller door starts from £949 inc VAT, including remote controls, a safety edge and full professional fitting by our own engineers. A fitted sectional door starts from £1,500 inc VAT on the same basis.
The price you pay is the written quote you get after a free survey, and what we quote is what you pay, with no hidden extras. On the day, the old door is removed and the work area made safe, the new door is fitted, alignment and safety edge are checked, and we show you how it all works. A roller door typically takes 3 to 5 hours on site. Every door we install carries a 5-year parts and labour warranty. Our garage door installation page explains each stage.
What moves the price up or down
- Width. The opening decides the range, and Classic 77 has three width bands for wide and double openings.
- Range. Premium 55 costs more than Standard 55 and insulates better, which matters for an attached garage or one used as a workshop.
- Colour. White and dark brown are included; most other colours add a small amount.
- Controls. Key switch controls are standard; a safety edge kit adds remote control and fully automatic operation.
- The opening. Removing a pier or replacing a lintel is building work before the door, and our post on converting two garage doors into one covers it.
Getting rid of the old door
When we fit the door, removing the old one is part of the job. If you are fitting a DIY kit, the old door is yours to dispose of. Steel and aluminium are worth taking to a scrap yard, the council may collect it as a bulky item or take it at the household recycling centre, and a licensed waste carrier or a skip will take the lot. Motors, sensors and remotes count as electrical waste and must be handled separately. Our guide to garage door recycling and disposal sets out every option.
Repair or replace?
Not every tired door needs replacing. Small repairs, such as a strap fault, a lock issue or a minor adjustment, start from around £60 to £75, and larger ones such as a motor or control unit replacement start from around £350. Replacement makes more sense when the door is badly damaged, insecure, repeatedly failing or poorly fitted, or when the repair quote gets close to the price of a new door. Our garage door repair service gives a fixed written quote in Norfolk and Suffolk, and our post on how long roller garage doors last lists the wear signs to look for.
When to replace
A struggling door tends to show it in winter, when seals stiffen, the evenings are dark and the door is used in the cold. If yours is already unreliable, it is better to plan the replacement than wait for it to fail. DIY orders are usually delivered within 4 weeks, and for 2026 the cut-off for pre-Christmas delivery is Friday 13 November; orders after that date are made in turn and delivered as soon as they are ready. For a fitted door, book a free survey early to get a date in the diary.
FAQs
How much does it cost to replace a garage door in the UK?
With us, a DIY roller door kit starts from £505 inc VAT for a Standard 55 single door, plus £65 delivery to mainland England and Wales or free collection. A fitted roller door in Norfolk and Suffolk starts from £949 inc VAT, including remote controls, a safety edge and fitting.
Does the price of a fitted roller door include removing the old door?
Yes. When our engineers fit a new door, removing the old one and leaving the work area tidy is part of the installation. The fixed written quote you get after the free survey is the price you pay, with no hidden extras.
Is it cheaper to replace a garage door myself with a DIY kit?
The door costs less, because you are not paying for fitting, but you supply the time, a second person for lifting, the tools and the disposal of the old door. Most self-fitters should allow a full day for a single door.
When is repairing a garage door better value than replacing it?
When the door is sound and the fault is limited. Small repairs such as a strap fault or a minor adjustment start from around £60 to £75. Replacement makes more sense when the door is badly damaged, insecure, repeatedly failing, or the repair cost gets close to a new door.
How long does a garage door replacement take from ordering to fitting?
DIY orders are usually delivered within 4 weeks, and fitting a single door takes most people a full day. For a door we fit, the survey and quote come first, then the fitting date, and a roller door typically takes 3 to 5 hours on site.
What warranty comes with a replacement roller garage door from TWF?
Every door we install comes with a 5-year parts and labour warranty covering the door mechanism and our workmanship. Our DIY roller doors are backed by a 5-year warranty too.
